I have heard the phrase "battle stations surface" or "battle stations surfaced' used somewhere, but dont recall where. The posting of lookouts and manning of flak guns would be an obvious difference. Joe S

Some of O'Kane's narrative shortens "Battle Stations- Surface" to "Battle Surface".
I, personally, think a better terminology would be "Battle Stations-Torpedo" or "Battle Stations- Gun".
Simple and could be used on the surface, or submerged.
I really don't like having my deck gun crew mucking about on deck during a night surface torpedo attack.

I read this in books all the time, battle stations surface, etc. Just finished Red Scorpion, USS Rasher. Just about every chapter you could find this said by the skippers.

I remember in Thunder Below, Fluckey said he was delighted to be the first submariner to give the order, "Battle Stations Rockets!"
