Can't say I've seen the crash dive fail to stop diving unless I'm damaged or I in advertently hit the D key after the C key.
now tj thats not nice they just got finished saying going to flank on
the diesels before diving wasnt done.

which explains why I use the technique you mention most times
to get some knots over the dive planes.

if all else fails hit the s key and try to check the dive that way
but dont forget to level off.

because I fight alot at pd. I usually after hitting flank count
to five and then hit d immediately afterwhich I hit P
it works fine either way to just hit the depth you want
on the dial instead just as fast the trick to a quick
dive is inititial speed even the american boats will
go under quick by this method.
