What bugs me is how Sharpton wants Mukasey to meet with the CBC and "civil rights leaders" can you say Jesse Jackson to discuss the matter...

So, by segmenting this into a Black vs. White vs. <insert nationality here> issue as Sharpton is positioning for, how does a "national" crime statistic get solved? No, let's get the CBC involved, not "the Congress", the representative body of all Americans to work on this problem. No, let's focus on the "black" aspect of the issue, not the whole hate crime issue...

Well, what do you expect when you read CNN? Anyone else besides CNN reporting anything about Sharpton? Doubt it, and if they are, very minimally.

Hate's always existed. partcuarlly in some areas the south, its roots are rather deep in some places. What this really is, is the media short stroking the aftermath of the whole jena 6 episode. No matter what, they have to draw any news item for as much as they can, for as long as they can if it gets ratings.

Well, normally I'd go for "The National Enquirer" first but they hadn't picked up on it yet...

Hate crime. What is really beiing punished is the thoughts or words which someone is offended by. If you throttle someone to within an inch of their life and either before, during or after the throttling you speak an offensive word against the victims race, creed, or sexual orientation, its a hate crime. Expect a rise in murder soon. Never leave the victim alive or the prosecutor will pile the 'hate crime' on top of the assault charge.

Which brings me to the prosecutors themselves, who, when their case is weak always inflate the number of charges hoping for the golden be-be. This is just another be-be.

They still have to prove it was a hate crime to a jury beyond reasonable doubt.

i doubt thats easy in a lot of cases, provideing the jury understands "reasonable doubt".

Might I suggeat you view the film 12 Angry Men. BTW there is no way that a jury is ever as smart as the folks in the movie. Beyond that the entire jury process is heavily weighted in favor of the prosecution, from the questionares before the selection to the instructions given by the judge.
