As for the liners, I came across three one time doing the same thing - running dark and positively steaming along at 21 knots, with a fairly light four destroyer escort. If you play GWX, and you've nothing to do at 4am on Dec. 13th 1939, I suggest you have a picnic precisely 5.8km north of the southmost intersect of AM51/52. Not sure if this little basket of goodies is repeatable, but its worth a look.
Nope they were Canadian. The tankers that is. Both are now enjoying the sights and sounds of 1000m+ depths
