Default A cool idea...

Tell me what you think of this idea;

I have my radio all set up with various stations and different types of music, along with the CBS mod, etc. The one thing I 've been wanting to do is set up the radio antennas to geographical coordinates with limited ranges (realistic), so for instance. japan radio would only be heard in proximity to japan.

I know awhile ago, someone was already working on this quite a bit, and there may even be a mod already for that. Not sure if it was done or not.

But that gave me another idea.

What if I did the same thing; radio transmissions that are proximity based around different islands, but instead of music, it was military transmissions giving away the coordinates of task forces and enemy movements scripted into the mission.

So what it creates is this...

You leave Pearl on a patrol mission to (somewhere). As you pass by various islands, or get close enough to Japan, if you scan the radio you may intercept transmissions that tell you where and when to intercept a huge task force, etc. This would be as opposed to the radio messages just telling you where to go, or in addition to them. Perhaps like a big bonus; you would have the normal radio messages from HQ, but if you listen hard enough to the radio, and intercept the lucky message, you'll be directed to the motherload of task forces.

Might add some fun to the gameplay; and should be easily scripted into various missions.

Just wondering if anyone would be interested in this sort of thing?

I think it would be cool, especially the limited range part. The only unrealistic thing I can see is if it is broadcast all the time; meaning there should be a very low chance of actually picking it up at any given time. If you get a signal anytime you're within range it becomes another game mechanism, and realism actually goes down.

You can have the game transmit until the message is received. Usually you high priority messages get set up to do this. You lesser news type things you just set up the probability % that the sub will get the message. As far as the zone's for specific areas of patrolling. I do not know how to control that.

Understood Sailor Steve.

I see it this way; sometimes in game design, for the sake of enjoyable gameplay, certain concessions have to be made.

Yes, a particular island might be transmitting all the time, but the player will not know which island. Or, at the mission startup, perhaps two or three possible locations could be given, ie: "Leave Pearl, search here and here to intercept IJN transmission".

So you would not know where exactly to go to intercept the transmission. It has to be searched for. You may get it, you may not.

If it was too hard to find, then it would become pointless and not fun. So you have to make a concession of making it 'available' to a degree.

Lots of variable can be done. It could be a normal mission that tells you go and patrol zone X, but while there you may/may not intercept a transmission with intel, depending on how well you scan your radio. In the meantime, there would also always be other targets around to go for as well. But the real motherload of carriers would be in the transmission, if intercepted.

Just playing around with ideas. Suggestions definately welcome.
