Only Combat Mission & Close Combat series comes to my mind. CM is turn based, quite good. CC is quite old, but still I like it very much.

i agree CC and CM in all their versions are excellent...avoid the RTS's that rely on bases building uints..for perfectly obviuos reasons!
reckon the later versions of CM must have reasonable graphics ..mind you half an hour in you don't care anymore...your more worried about your surprise attack going wrong...and that tank and infantry platoon crossing the bridge.. ![]()

Well....the first games in the Blitzkrieg series? They could be pretty damn hard, even on normal setting.

"Soldiers: Heroes of WW2" and "Faces of War" are my favorites.
Soldiers: Heroes of WW2 Homepage: http://www.codemasters.com/soldiers/ Videos: Faces of War Homepage: www.facesofwargame.com/ Videos: Both of these games are the most realistic physics and damage models you can get in a RTS style genre. They allow you to pickup and store a ton of different items on each unit and vehicle: (booby traps, gasoline containers, different types of grenades, flares, flare guns, flame throwers, crowbars, crates, helmets, body armor, differenet types of ammunition, knives (to throw at soldiers without alerting others), explosives, metal detectors for mine sweeping, mines, bazookas, binoculars, matches (to set fire to things), first aid kits, bandages, radios, repair kits (to fix vehicles, tank tracks, etc ) What I like about both of the games is you can take your time and move through maps tactically. There is coop as well so you can play along side your friends to help each other out when you run low on resources and ammo. Each weapon has a different caliber so you will find yourself rummaging through abandon vehicles and crates just to find ammo for the weapons that you are using. So, instead of destroying everything in your path you can choose to damage vehicles and equipment in such a way that you will be able to repair and extract inventory items to rearm or reuse. Good thing about Faces of War, is that there is no building of units, no unlimited spawning, but, incredibly hard from time to time. The loss of one trooper can result in total defeat.

However, noting the original poster's dissatisfaction with Theatre of War graphics... well, none of the games that were listed so far are even halfway to what ToW had for graphics! :hmm:
Unfortunately realistic games are rarely very marketable, so they don't have much of a budget for graphics. That said, most of the games listed above more than make up for it with realism... |

I held off from buying TOW because most people seem to be dissatisfied with the gameplay, and I want to see if they can come up with an addon that cures these problems.

I really like the graphics of Combat Mission and Theatre of War. They put alot of attention into detail as far as modeling. I was dissatisfied with the size of the maps in Theatre of War. I was expecting something the size of WW2 Online in terms of scale. I hope someday they make an RTS game with a scaled down size of different theatres such a Europe rather than fighting in an obvious limited square or a box.
