Hehe - In the UK at least, the hummour works by taking the most excessive stereotype of a US Cop movie - and superimposing it on the British Police. Lets face it, the British Bobby hardly looks glamerous, nor is he able to carry a gun during a regular day at the office.

Hot Fuzz works because its so wrong
It's not a bad movie ......nothing like reality though

So on average, what percentage of the British Police Force do you think carry weapons on a day to day basis ? :hmm:
Define weapon. They all carry Trunchons

If you mean firearms - then 7% of police officers who work in London have the training that allows them to use firearms. Though, the majority of them will either not be on regular patrol or will not carry firearms except under certain circumstances.

Outside the big cities, it is exceptional to come across an armed police officer.

Yeah, your right, by weapon I didn't mean truncheon or baton, but more: A weapon, especially a pistol or rifle, capable of firing a projectile and using an explosive charge as a propellant.

Your figures are quite interesting, but I suspect a few percentage points too low.
As for areas outside of London I believe the figures are approximately half of those as stated for London. There are however always armed response vehicles patrolling in a discreet manner
Before I googled it (and got a wikipedia article), I was going to guess at 15-25% I was suprised, but then again I've worked at high risk targets which are protected by armed police - so my perception was distorted.

Anyway. The wiki article cited the police services own report as its source so I suspect the figure is accurate.

As accurate as allowed under the Official Secrets Act (and suitably fit for public consumption)

It's a confiscated weapon - watch the movie

The biggest snag with that film is that now I can't ask my wife if she wants 'anything from the shop' without getting a one word answer....

"Haven't you ever screamed 'AAAAAARRRRRRRGGGGGHHHHH' and emptied your gun into the air?"

"Um...no."
