Default minelayers

Are there any mods out there that will let you utilize a minelayer in a special mission? Could be interesting!:hmm:

The problem with a minelayer is what to use for a mine. There is a tenth type of torpedo in the games cfg file which might be able to be utilised but I don't believe anybody has done any work on this at the present :hmm:

also how do you get credit for the kill... since obviously the tactic is to lay the mines and get the heck out of dodge.

dont you have to be within hydrophone distance to get the credit?

sounds like an interesting project

Plonk them in front of a convoy, get the heck out of dodge and sit 20km away and wait for the explosions, plus you will never have to tangle with a DD.....

Great Idea, I like it!!

If they are free floating mines that might work... but those would drift i think.

im pretty sure German U-boat laid mines were anchored to the sea floor of not more than perhaps 30 meters depth, and that they didnt arm until many hours after being fired. (24 hours, 12 hours?) something like that. this protected the u-boat from impacting it's own mines when departing the deployment area.

so if you run into a convoy in the middle of the atlantic, the mines will do you no good.

Hmm.. it sounds possible, ´but I think you'll have to be in range then, because otherwise it wouldn't work, but, in fact, that is realistic because you won't know if you sank something if you're far anyway.

0-speed magnetic torpedoes wit 999999 disappear time.. but how to edit the disappear time.

Yes, a minelaying sub would be much fun indeed if it could be done.

But then again so would a playable minelaying comerce raider...hehe.

My idea was that one would lay the mines with their cradles at the mouths of harbours etc. and wait for the the fun to begin, at a discreet distance of course or wait for intel reports of your success! Another could be one mission of simply collecting renown for laying them undetected.:hmm:

Mines carried by the VIID

TMA (Torpedo mine A) Mines were pre-war standard design floating mines, phased out by TMB from mid-September 1939. Stored aboard U-boats in the same manner as torpedoes, TMA mines were shorter than “eels”, measuring only 3.64 metres long. Their detonator was of the magnetic influence type. However because the complete mine comprised the anchor by which to moor it to the seabed plus the connecting cable, the actual warhead was relatively small at 215kg.

TMB was also designed especially for submarine use. Again deployed via the torpedo tubes in the same manner as a torpedo, they were slightly smaller than TMA mines — measuring 2.31 meters — thereby allowing the submarine carrier to load even more into its confined storage space. Up to three could be fired from a single torpedo tube as a single shot. This was an unearthed “ground mine” that utilized a magnetic firing pistol, activated on a timer allowing the U-boat to depart before the mine became “live”. It carried an explosive TNT charge of 567kg — twice that of period torpedoes. The mine was laid on the bottom in shallow seaways and detonated by the magnetic field generated by large ships passing above. The explosive force beneath a ship's keel carried by shock waves through incompressible water was usually more effective than a contact hit against a hull side, often snapping a vessel's spine and dooming her instantly.
These mines were originally ordered laid at a depth of 30 metres. However questions arose as to the weapon's reliability at that depth and further trails were conducted. Following these it was established that 25-metres was a more suitable depth, and more likely to prove fatal to shipping above. It began to be noticed that often the magnetic trigger was itself overly sensitive and smaller ships were sunk than those intended. The blast from such a mine against smaller trawlers was particularly devastating. U-boat crews therefore began sowing their minefields in progressively shallower waters as well as de-magnetizing them so as to reduce their sensitivity

yup it's the being UNDETECTED part that counts with minelaying missions..(have had them for years..see the small mod on my web-site )
all technical detail and other artifactual realism issues aside (of which no doubt there is a list as long as every-bodys arm!) from a gameplay point of view reaching a port laying mines across it's entrance or approaching waters...(Fritz Lemp recieved a medal for doing same) is the closest thing to a genuine stealth mission there is...why? because any detection at all in such locations would result in the immediate dispatch of no not destroyers...but think about it...yes mine sweepers..(no doubt DDs also but...that's besides the point..) ..there by rendering the whole excercise pointless...

so it is definitely a different ball game laying mines ...with a use-full dose of imagination...(as far as the mod goes any way..as mentioned else where it needs a more effective detonation method...you can allready lay the mine at any depth you like and it will remain there...but it still requires very close contact for an explosion being as it is a modified torpedoe..)

the point of the mod is (as deepboat described) NOT the technical accuracy of the mines them selves BUT what is required of the player in order to effectively deploy them in game...the mines them selves are secondary to the gameplay posibilities they set the player onto
