Sometimes , when you have a sudden visual contact and dive for attack, its too late to ask for depth under keel because the DD will spot you. What do you do take the risk or go for a walk?

On the few occasions i have been cought in shallow water i always came up to at least fire a last ditch spread at the DD in hopes of at least scoring a hit.
quick estimates of range and speed on the TDC screen are a nice ability to have - about a 3 to 5 degree spread with all bow tubes... magnetic fuses set at 4 meters depth. if you score a hit and sink him you can run for the deeper water on the surface at flank speed hopefully before his friends start showing up. Beats the alternative - and you are almost never going to escape a severe beating if you cant go below 60 meters. aside from blowing ballast to periscope depth (you will have to order PD before passing 35 - 40 meters) and trying to shoot the DD your only hope is to take 4 to 6 hours of a severe beating before you finally die. if there was only one escort, it might have been wise to engage him and sink him first. then turn you attention to sinking any amred merchants before surfacing and killing the rest with the deck gun. Your best chances of making an attack succeed in really shallow water is to mount a surface attack at night from long range. make use of all bow tubes and come about hard and fire the stern tubes... im talking at ranges of about 2500 - 3500 meters. put the convoy behind you and RUN. you can still see if you score the hits or not from that far.
