Ahem, children......................................:rol l:

An interesting detour in this commentary on Rushdie's knighthood, regarding the Queen versus Prince Charles and the possible future (mis)representation of England.

Cheerio!

I really don't understand this knighthood at all(not that I understand most of them).

Unless we were looking to p#ss off the Muslim world why give it?

I'm happy to be corrected by someone here, but as far as I know all this bloke has done is write a book that caused no amount of hassle (I haven't read it , but I've heard that it's pretty boring and difficult to read) causing the British tax payers to pay God alone knows how much,to protect him.

Is Tony Blair that stupid? - Wait a minute - Iraq? Yeah he must be that stupid.

Thanks Tone, for once again making England a more dangerous place to live in

I had to go to wikipedia.com just to find out who you were talking about.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Salman_Rushdie

I didn't really care who Rushdie was or is, but my what a stunning wife he has.

Seems I've been missing her shows on the cooking channel:

Quote:
Milan Rushdie. Since 2004, he has been married to the Indian actress and model Padma Lakshmi, the host of the American reality-television show Top Chef.
What a funny name for someone the Muslims are mad at ... this guy has been in hiding since 1988 and just recently stepped out in faith that his money can protect him (I suspect)

He hasn't been hiding the whole time. What happened was when he didn't die he started to just live his life and basically its understood that the fatwah is null at the moment since nobody seems to have gone very far in pursuing it. He isn't hiding behind money. He's not one of those types. His books are interesting and very rich in cultural influences and very complex characters. The Satanic Verses got him in trouble with the Muslims for the same reason the Danish cartoons were controlversial: much of the orthodoxy didn't like the interpretation of Islam.

That aside he deserves the knighthood for being such a brilliant author. He's better than half the bozos who get knighted anyway.

I have The Satanic Verses and have read Midnight's Children and some of his other works. But the thing I most remembered that he wrote was about the boundaries of cultures and how it was in this area of cultural overlap that "newness" enters the world. So kudos to Sir Salman. Regarding Pakistan. With Waziristan and the Pushtun lands of the Northwest Frontier a defacto safe haven for Taliban & al-Qaeda, The ISI links to the aforementioned and opium smugglers, the increasing militancy of Islamists in Pakistan and their progress at the ballot box, we could be seeing the rise of a freely elected Islamist government with nuclear weapons sooner than we think.

Robbo, I personally don't like Rushdie's work. That's the only reason I disagree with the award.

We shouldn't take the opinions of those who would kill over this kind of thing.

Kind of like saying "if we withdraw, the terrorists will have a victory"

They will not stop demanding and there will be no reasoning with them.

14 centuries of ruminating the indigestible remains of a murderous bandit's pseudo-religious self-justification in an attempt to finally find after such a long time at least something of value in it. no wonder that their bellies are hurting when consuming that stuff, so that they start yelling in pain when you just even look at them.

Better advise would have been to take a laxative as long as there was time, do your... business, and then move on and leave it behind. Instead: eternal heartburn, and winds forever. Who cares.

Their yelling and winds are starting to annoy other people.
