For a quick fix right now, if you can't wait:

Save a game IN BASE. Then, go to mydocuments/sh4/data/cfg/savegames/<most recent savegame folder>. Open up careertrack.upc in Notepad. Look for the name of your current boat (USS DRUM, USS BALAO, etc.) and change it to your liking. Also, have a looksee in the activeplayerunits.upc file as well, I can't remember right now if the unit name shows up here as well, or not.

For a permanent fix, I'd recommend Beery's solution (thanks, Beery!!!), which is to edit the cfg file for the type/types of sub for which you want to change name. I definitely reccommend this one the next time you fire up a new career.

Beery's solution:

[UnitClass]

UnitType=200
AppearanceDate=19411201
DisappearanceDate=19450902
DisplayName=US Gato
[Texture 1]
TextureName=data/Submarine/NSS_Gato/NSS_Gato_T01.tga
LightmapTextureName=data/Submarine/NSS_Gato/NSS_Gato_O01.tga
StartDate=19411201
EndDate=19421231
Frequency=1
[Texture 2]
TextureName=data/Submarine/NSS_Gato/NSS_Gato_T02.tga
LightmapTextureName=data/Submarine/NSS_Gato/NSS_Gato_O01.tga
StartDate=19430101
EndDate=19450901
Frequency=1

[Unit 1]
Name=USS Wahoo (SS-238)
DOC=19411201
DOD=19450902

That will give you the USS Wahoo every time you choose a Gato in a career.

It's only bad luck to rename a ship after it's in the water. In 1913 the Royal Navy changed all the designations of their ships. The Acheron class Torpedo Boat Destroyers became the 'K' class. They talked of renaming them all with names beginning with the letter 'K', but it was pointed out that they had all already been launched and were approching completion. the succeeding Laforey class were still under construction, so it was considered okay to rename them all with names beginning with 'L' when they became the 'L' class.

The funniest instance of this for me was the original 1797 American frigate United States, sister to Constitution and President. When the Confederacy captured Gosport Naval Yard at Norfolk, Virginia, one of the ships taken was that old frigate. Since it was considered bad luck to rename her, she became CSS United States. On the other hand, the steam frigate Merrimack was rebuilt in drydock as the first American ironclad, so it was considered okay to rename her CSS Virginia.

Sailor Steve, it's posts like this that make me think that you are some sort of AI program with all the combined naval history of the world programmed into it instead of a real person! :rotfl:

I play tabletop naval games. I read a lot of books. Other crazy people talk to themselves or their invisible friends about all sorts of things. Me, when I'm bored I lecture my invisible class on naval history (or aviation history, or Grand Prix history). I can rattle off most of the variants and sub-variants of most types of American fighters ever built, and I can name every GP World Champion since the championship started in 1950, plus a lot of the development details and rules changes. I can tell you the difference between British battleships from 1893 on; same with British destroyers. If I don't know the answers, I know where to look them up.

On the other hand, I can't seem to get my life together, my kids won't talk to me, I don't date and I'm still living in a shelter for homeless people. Wanna trade lives?
