Why are these options not more feasable:

Keep a stickied thread with a hosts.txt file. People with large signatures are required to update the thread with a post, giving the location of the picture host. Modify the hosts file, delete the post. People can copy 'n paste the text into their c:/windows/hosts.txt file to block the hosting domains.

Uncheck "show signatures" and "show avatars" in the control panel.

Turn off images in your browser. This is partially why I use Firefox, Galeon, Epiphany, and Konquerer. Use one browser for surfing, another browser for functionality.

I sympathize with the people under a quota, but having a "colorful" forum goes a long way to making it attractive. I don't normally keep a signature just because I'm cool like that -- I know there's poor bastards in Australia under Bigpond that get hosed per gigabyte. Still, I like seeing some of the signatures. If I had to deal with a quota, I would be using the "block images" functionality in most Gecko browsers. Firefox makes it very easy to withhold images until you press the toolbar icon to "show images on this page". If I was really strapped (dialup *and* quota), I'd be using Lynx (text-only browser).

It just seems like there is a superior way of handling the issue, although bombing this thread with all my animated .gifs probably isn't it.
