Strange. Are you sure no friendly a/c were in the vicinity? I've noticed aircraft are hard to see and hear until they're very close. Maybe your report generated an air strike? That wouldn't explain whyyou got credited though.

I was looking through some of the game files , from memory I think it was Airstrike in the cfg folder and I do remember seeing a section related to probability of friendly air strike on contact reports. So its definatly a posability

I tried an experiment over the weekend. I came accross a large task force and had ony two torpedoes left. I fired off the two torpedoes and scored a DD and slipped away. I then radioed in a convoy report and recieved the "Good find will assign assets" message. So I decided to follow the convoy a while. I followed for a day and a half and nothing happened. Maybe they were scared of it. It was probably the biggest TF Ive seen what with two carriers and some battleships, pretty sure one was a Yamato. |

I've seen friendly aircraft bombing merchants before.
I was attacking a lone merchant and radar showed two more on an intersecting course. I stayed submerged and was looking for them with the scope in light fog. I noticed what looked like flames through the fog, and sure enough, one of the ships was burning. :hmm: I surfaced and radar picked up an aircraft that got identified as friendly. I saw him drop another stick of bombs on the same ship. This was without any kind of report from me.

I wouldn't be surprised if it did sink them for you to get credit if you stay in visual range. Would be interesting to try and find out. |

Lets see....well It was dark when this all went down so its very much a possibility that friendly planes took out the merchants. I almost wish this would happen to someone else because I'm starting to feel like a liar. Only other pertinent info I can offer is that this occured in the small straight that runs North/South directly east of Rabaul and the Bismark Sea.

When I was looking at the files regarding air attacks and contact reports there were several factors involved. The convoy you report on must be in range of an allied air base and even then there is a probality factor involved. From memory I think it was about a 20 percent chance of an attack occouring. So reporting on a convoy in no way will guarente an airstrike.
