1. Is this really going that far that renaming a submarine in a computer game counts as an Insult to fallen heroes?
You might turn back a little on the flag weaving.

2. You need to edit two files:
\my files\sh4\data\cfg\savegames\save game number
ActiveUserPlayerUnits.upc
CareerTrack.upc

Look up the name of your boat in those files and change it.

Okay, just for the record I'm not American, and it's not flag-waving to honour the individuals who gave their lives, or risked them, in combat -- no matter the flag they sailed under. My point was that the boats in SH4 carry the names of real WW2 US submarines, and I didn't want anyone to think I was not aware of that by asking my question.

And I'm aware that it's bad luck to rename a boat! I used to teach blue-water keelboat sailing many moons ago, and skippered more than my share of charters, and have a great appreciation for nautical tradition. But then, it used to be bad luck to have a woman aboard ship, and to be honest I'd buck that one as well for a cute blonde XO in tropical dress anyday.

Actually I rename my boats for the simple reason that I want a blank record and not trying to emulate some historical events.
And it doesnt feel good to me to have a sub that got sunk or something.

Ok I wanted to BUMP this as well as ask an additional question...

I can find the CareerTrack.upc file but the other Ant mentions, "Activeuserplayerunits.upc" is no where to be found...help please?

EDIT: I searched my entire UBI folder for this file and found nothing. For player name is it my captains name? or something like that?

For a quick fix right now, if you can't wait:

Save a game IN BASE. Then, go to mydocuments/sh4/data/cfg/savegames/<most recent savegame folder>. Open up careertrack.upc in Notepad. Look for the name of your current boat (USS DRUM, USS BALAO, etc.) and change it to your liking. Also, have a looksee in the activeplayerunits.upc file as well, I can't remember right now if the unit name shows up here as well, or not.

For a permanent fix, I'd recommend Beery's solution (thanks, Beery!!!), which is to edit the cfg file for the type/types of sub for which you want to change name. I definitely reccommend this one the next time you fire up a new career.
