It took nato from 1977 to 1996 to learn the names of the typhoon submarines it was only in 2001 that the offical list of names for the submarines including the ones from the 1950's were released to the public.
today its a bit more open.

With the way her conning tower sits on the bulge for the missiles, she should be fairly easy to identify.

Yup, Russia has changed a lot for sure. I did actually go there in 1979 when it was all still very secretive, and it was an enjoyable trip too, although we were shepherded about a bit and I suspect steered away from some stuff.
Incidentally, for those of you into the Russian stuff, I recommend the book 'Russian Submarines - Guardians of the Motherland' by Wayne Frey ISBN 0 - 7414 - 3447 - 4 Black and white pics only, and the repro could be a little better than it is on some of the pics, but if you want a lot of pictures of the 705, 971 and 941 subs (confusingly aka in NATO as the 'Alpha', 'Akula' and the 'Typhoon'), this book is worth a look. |
