E-5's that are also single parents still have it pretty rough, but it's a step in the right direction.

I know several guys who came into the military at E-2 or E-1 as the sole breadwinner for their families (1 or more kids), and they barely scraped by.

People don't realize it but in the grand scope of things the pay is crap especially so for junior enlisted. You can't save any money worth anything and when you do you have to spend it on the next change of station move.
