Default SH3 fans opinion on SH4

Hi guys, Im a long time fan of the silent hunter series, still loving SH3. Im just wondering is it worth my while getting SH4?

Graphics look good from the few screen shots ive seen over on the ubi forums.

Opinions would be welcomed.

Should you get SH4? Yes. Absolutely. Don't compare it to a fully patched and modded SH3 though, because SH4 is not yet fully patched or modded. When it is, it will be a better sim in my view because it offers a greater variety of gameplay elements and has superior graphics.

Short but sweet and very true.

I'd also like to add... I absolutely love the TDC setup for manual shots.

That is alge in the water. It is done very well. If your scope is at 0 degrees it comes at the scope and if you are at 180 degrees with your scope you can see the alge going away from the scope. Little things like this that really add to the game.

I'm a yay. Reason is the bold use of post process filtering...some hate it but I really like the effect. It just grows on you after a while. I looked at SH3 (do not get me wrong here, SH3/GWX just blows me away) seemed to clean. Just something about PPF that gives this game a different light.

If by post process filtering you mean the grainy look, id have to agree with you. i think it looks great in games, I remember Silent Hill 2 (or was it 3?) had it, i loved it.

What new features has it got? Different missions like pilot pick up/troop drop off etc I saw them.

It is a dynamic campaign isnt it??

Yes, drop off supplies, spys, pick up pilots. Patrol a particular sea area. It is very nice and more imaginative than just a grid patrol for 24 hours. Although it follows what happened in the war, you do not affect the outcome with your actions. That is fine by me.

Same as in SH3.

Ok, i think Im sold. I know there are problems with it, alot of crashes etc?

One last thing, are the graphics as good as they look in the screen shots compared to SH3? The stuff on the ocean floor is brilliant.

You should have posted this in the SH3 forum! Wait... wait, you know what they would say...

I for one have been waiting to go back to the pacific since SH1, and I am happy with SH4 bugs and all.

The graphics are among my favorite features but the lack of FSAA is a very unfavorite graphic element.

I like the damage graphics, when you can see holes in the ship you've just torpedoed, that's a good thing.

In the Sub School mission, when you sink the cruiser, if you watch the action through the periscope, you can see the scout planes get blown off the back of the cruiser into the water, pretty cool

If you are into sub sims SH4 is a definite buy. It does have some faults listed all over the forum pages so I won't go into them here. I think the potential of SH4 as a modern 2007 Subsim outweighs the negatives, most of which (hopefully) will be eliminated when the patch series arrives.

I voted Nay because imo SH4 at current is a buggy POS with severe playability and gaming issues. Then again, to be fair, so was SH3 when it came out, imo, which is why I didn't play it, either, until it was fixed.

Which is why I still believe SH4, once corrected, will not only outshine SH3 it will ROCK.

But until that day comes (and I fully expect it to) I'll stick with SH3 for the nonce...
