Default Escorts not aggressive enough? Like what version are you playing?

I have attacked dozens of convoys now and have YET to NOT get jumped as soon as my fish rip open a merchant. And they are good, REAL good. Dropping charges right on top of me no matter how fast or slow I'm going, whether I'm in silent running or have changed course. I'm not one to drop down to 600-700 feet, like some of the mods allow since this is insane, for immersion prospects ( I have issues of not imploding as my boat passes the 1800 foot mark). Now, I don't know if I just have'nt had the pleasure of a convoy being lead by suicide escorts, but from MY experience of patrols this has'nt been the case. With the one rare exception of an escort in flames when the convoy passed over without my firing any fish or shells.

I have been experimenting with the escorts. I saved a game just prior to attacking a convoy and reloaded and ran it several times. The majority of the time the convoy acted as most people have experienced, and I was able to savage it while the three escorts milled about uselessly. Twice, however, the escorts were hyper aggressive and attacked aggressively. The first time it happened I lost the boat, and the second time I was heavily damaged that I would not have been able to submerge and, given my proximity to enemy air patrols, would probably not made it back to port.
I also noticed something else interesting. When the escorts were in the 'aggressive mode' the convoy also acted appropriately. In other words, they sped up, maneuvered to avoid me, and the convoy scattered.

I guess the convoys as a whole have a very wide range of experience then?

Dunno, but I've yet to see a DC attack even come close to me but then, I've only been playing in '41 early '42 so far.
