Admirals English and later Lockwood at Pearl didn't take too long to realize there was a problem with the torps.

On the other hand Christie and Fife in Australia took alot longer to understand that there was a problem. Besides...either Christie or Fife (I forget which one) actually worked at the BuOrd before the war and for a long time he refused to believe there was anything wrong with the torpedos.

Subs sailing from Pearl were eventually allowed to deactivate the magnetic exploders...but as soon as they entered areas commanded by Fife or Christie they had to reactivate them again...what a way to fight a war.
