yes, i thought about this too. i have done 6 patrols now, in 42 and 43, and im not getting any real dud's, like in sh3 where the torp would hit and just not explode. all my torps are exploding on contact, but some of em seem not to do any damage.

Well I don't have duds active, but it seems to to matter (I just came back from a mission where my torpedo ran wild and looped around! Lucky for me I was right next to a dock and the dock took the hit.)

I don't do manual TDC. I'm the Captain. I'm above such things. But I'm starting to get the impression that it's an angle and/or solution thing. While I was shooting at stationary boats in a relatively undefended harbor (just gunboats, so only had to stay submerged), I did a couple tests and found that my ability to hole a ship increased dramatically if I was shooting properly lined up with the "perfect shot" type deal. Any shots I did that were off the 90 degree line ended up not causing holes or any damage at all. Put about 8 fish in one boat without so much as a list. But turn to getting the perfect shot, and suddenly I had all but one shot make holes, and that one shot at least started a fire.

It requires more testing, but so far that seems to be what I could determine with stationary targets in a harbor.

I think I've started noticing this myself.

On certain ships both direct and glancing shots that hit the bow, stern, or even sometimes dead middle of a ship seem to do little to no damage at all. But there are soft spots, depending on the ship, like between the ends and fore and aft of the middle that is soft as goo. And a good direct hit from the perfect 90degree shot brings them down in one hit every time.

Also on most ships a dead middle shot straight up the butt gets them every time, but get it anything out of 90" square and they recieve middling damage to very little. But I think it all depends on the ship and I think I'm thinking of the "low" areas on ships as the softest spots of all.

Yah I'm finding this too. I think it is IMPERITIVE to have the proper aob or the mk14s just won't work. I tried some lower angle shots this morning with the auto tdc and had 8 misses!! Not a single hit!

I reloaded the same situation about 10 times and the best I could do at that angle (1500yds) was 2 hits on the same boat but not sunk....BUMMER!

I also feel that I am the captain, and should just be giving orders...not doing the work. hehe

I experienced the same effect, after firing 5 torpedoes at a stationary merchant in port at an angle of about 25 degrees off its port bow, all torpedoes detonated, but not one torpedo made a hole of any kind, and the ship listed to the port only about 5 degrees.

Its as though the torpedoes are directional, and 90 degree hits send the explosion right into the ship, while glancing detonations seem to "skip" off the target's hull.

It sounds like the ideal impact angle is still the one from SH3.

US torpedoes should be fairly ineffective at 90 deg. angle of impact and better at a more angled impact. The opposite of German torpedo problems. Something else for the devs to double check.

Really? I didn't know that. Well it'd sure be nice if this was fixed at some point. The torpedoes are just all kind of screwy.

Incidentally, I still get more solid hits with the 90 degree, but as they move it still gets less holes. After testing in the open ocean it didn't seem as effective. Of course, this was with the Type 10 torpedo, so maybe that has something to do with it.

Damn torpedoes!

hit a destroyer right up the but and it didnt even start on fire. definitely want to set your depth and try to make and angle adjustment so it hits under the guns...chain explosion to sinkage. i also find that closer to 90 the better. not just in results on impact but even getting an impact in the first place

i have had several of those...most were i think from being too close to the target if that happens? and i have a couple a patrol go off early....really really annoying

I've had a true dud before which just hit the side of the ship and sank without detonating. Would have been quite funny if it wasnt such a sweet shot
