And you get the benefit that a good sonar man can hear ships much farther as even the best watch crew could see them.

Watch crew: up to 16km in perfect conditions
Sonar man: up to ~25km in all conditions

It is my opinion that GWX watch crews are blind wether there is fog or not. I've been surprised at least a couple of times by enemy ships firing their guns on me while on low TC's (like TCx64) on relatively clear weathered days.
