I've found that it'll lose the lock if the target is over 5000 metres away. Unless you get a rather large wave rolling over the periscope then if the targets within 5km then you wont usually lose lock on.
Using the 16km atmosphere thingo is strange cause you'll hold the lock from 15km-8km. then it'll lose the lock until the target is within 5km.

The Russians knew where the carrier group was, but it would move in the four hours required by the bombers to get there. Their missiles needed precise information if they were to home in on the raid's primary target, the two American and one French carrier, or the mission was a wasted effort. The game was hide and seek, played over a million square miles of ocean. The losers died. |

for the people yelling about realism....
in fact the guy looks through the periscope and gives ORDERS (course, bearing, speed blabal) , so he holds (locks) the view all the time i would guess. Another person sets up the torpedo. But since it is a game a balance has to be found between realism and playability. Locking is a good thing to happen. But it can oalso be used to cheat! E.g. super dense fog just hit the "L" key on the suspected position of the ship. If the button clicks in you have a lock and sometimes it does not go away (if close). |

On the surface!
I was approaching on the surface in the last escapade. The target was about 9000 away. It wasn't the first time this happened, however. As a result of this, and not being good at manual targeting, all my torps missed. I now would have to return to port in disgrace.
To be fair, I noticed that I had unintentionally checked the 'Manual Targetting' box in the options section. That might be why. I would not know as I never would check it intentionally. Anyway, I removed GWX and reinstalled. I am on patrol with NO mods again. Sorry GWX guys if I blamed your mod by mistake. |

Visual distance in the periscope is limited to 5K max distance. Anything past that the game wont recongize by itself, you have to force it through player interaction by contsant pressing of the lock key or button. Combine that, with the waves, and there you have it.
