Before GWX came out I was playing at 100%, then I turned external view on when I got it so that I could see all the new ships. Believe I'll do the same with SH4, but I think it will be a while before I say to myself, "Well, I've seen everything I can see..." I mean it's just not the ships, but my God, look at that graphics engine. Anyone here going to be staring at your ship gliding just 10m below the waves toward a convoy? Don't think I'll get tired of that...

I still play SHIII with external views enabled. The cinematic experience is a large part of why I play games- the movie-like experience of being there, watching the sub pounding the waves and breaking the surface on diving/surfacing. I don't really use it to scan the environment for targets as a cheat (which is why we get demoted for using cinematic effects in III.) I suspect it's way too late to make my opinion known on this issue, but it was always my desire external view could be enabled for own sub focus only, so we would only see what could be seen from the sub (even if you'd have to have scuba to do it) with a smaller points hit.

Despite the point detractor, I will continue to play at less than full reality simply for the effects and emmersion. What's the use of putting all those polygons in the enemy ships if I only see them through a small, hazed, water-dripping parascope (as nice as that will look.) We could go back to Silent Service and I would still be able to sink all 10 of those polys.

Of course full reality is there for people for whom the cinimatic effects is not why they play games. Even Falcon4 doesn't cause mission failure if you use the chase view.

I'm going through the Submarine School first. Then I'll try some low-realism patrols.

In Falcon 4.0 AF, though, I've been on 100% realism the whole time, all the way since Day 1. I've never once disabled a single realism setting. But then again, 100% realism in that game is a whole lot more arcade-ish than 100% realism in SH III.

In SH3 I had External view on, and I didn't mess with torp settings... Might change that for SH4 (the torp settings one).

I'll probably set all settings on, excluding the manual targetting and external cam. Then do the tutorial missions and start my first campaign.

External cam on, of course

I´m just wondering how they dealt with the duds on 100% realism ... we´ll have a tough time if they modelled this aspect accurately...

Cheers, AS

I like having map updates on as I think it's a pain to to do manual plotting of contacts by myself in addition to running the boat. Now if I could call out contacts to my XO while I'm peering through the scope and have HIM do the plotting I'd gladly go with that option.

There is an SH3 mod that leaves the map blank except for sonar tracks. When you 'tag' a ship through the periscope or UZO it then shows up on the attack map. It's called the 'Assisted Plotting Mod'.

There's a little blurb over at the official site, within the FAQ. It's also been mentioned in a preview or two, too.

I have never used the external camera EVER in SH3 as im a full switch player.

If SH4 gets a decent wrap and I buy it at a later date I may only use External camera if there was a post mission recording - otherwise im confined to the sub.

After all the intention I hope is a sub simulation not a out of body experience sumulation.

I have to agree with Charos. I have to have the camera disabled or it takes me out of the game. I love WWII submarines because of the old DD vs Sub cat and mouse game. Not being able to see the enemy. Besides if I want to see the ocean, I'll just surface and go on the deck and ponder if a real submarine captain did the same as me. However since SHIIIs TDC was a pain to learn, I'll stick with WO help. I'll keep everything else except duds.

All of this sounds great!!! I just hope I ordered the right game. You all are calling it SH4(SHIV).

I ordered "Silent Hunter: Wolves of the Pacific" and it will be here today via FedEx. I hope this is concidered Silent Hunter 4. (???)

Cheers!!!
