Does Dell actually make DVD Drives? Probably not. It's probably just 'branded' as a Dell drive. Try to find out what kind of drive it actually is if possible. That info might be displayed in the Device Manager. If the firmware of the drive has also been 'branded', then it will probably show as a Dell drive in there too, but try it anway.

Control Panel --> System --> Hardware --> Device Manager --> DVD/CD ROM drives

Mine show as:

Pioneer DVD-RW DVR-106D
Plextor DVD-ROM PX-320A

If the make and model shows up in there then put it into Google followed by the word 'Firmware'(Pioneer DVR-106D Firmware for example), and find out if there's a firmware update available for it. If it shows up as a Dell in the Device Manager, then see if Dell has a firmware update for it.

Also, sometimes you can tell what the firmware version is in the Device Manager by double-clicking on it and clicking the 'Details' tab. Once you are on the Details tab there is a drop-down menu and one of the choices is 'Firmware Revision', but that is nothing but a blank for my drive. However, by looking at the default selection of the Details tab(Device Instance Id), I see this for one of my drives...

IDE\CdRomPIONEER_DVD-RW__DVR-106D________________1.08____\43204446304c343338335 738204c202020202020

Since I had downloaded and updated my the firmware for my drive I already knew what my firmware version was... but anyway it's displayed there.

Firmware Version = 1.08

I don't know if it will help but making sure you have the latest firmware update installed for the drive is about all I can think of at the moment.

Good luck!

Creating an image of a CD you own is however legal.... DW I figured problems with that.
