I dont even move the boat in port
Just bring up the outbound pattern then click return to course and off I go

For the inbound you want to be closish to the inbound marker
The inbound pattern will bring up the route from the maker to home
Hitting return to course will join your boat to the start of that route

Still having problem at inbound Kiel waypoint!

I approach the Keil inbound point with a heading of 000 degrees, (due North). I may have a tiny residual velocity.

I still get the inbound waypoints plotted across land and leading off to the northwest.

This is NOT the outbound track, because it doesn't have the little starting hook that is the exit from the docks and the curve around the port to the canal entrance; it definitely is the inbound track, because it starts with several long segments.

The only thing wrong with it is that it's 90 degrees counter clockwise, and leads across land and out to the North sea.

Can some GWX designer please give some hints about the proper use of the Kiel inbound pattern?

I searched the GWX manual and there is absolutely nothing about using the Kiel patterns. The manual is a superb document about U-boat history, but it doesn't say much about the game play.

Don't approach it due north. If you enter the canal at NE as you would normally, and are at the marker, the route will plot properly. Approach heading east to be doubly sure if you want. I would say even if your heading had been 001 instead of 000 it would have worked. Don't complicate things and just point the boat towards the canal entrance NE as you would normally.

Used a heading of 45 degrees; it worked!

Thanks!

I hit the Kiel inbound point with a heading of NE, or 45 degrees, and it worked perfectly.

Wow, you guys do a lot to make it work. Am I just lucking in how easy it is for me to use (and thus, am I jinxing myself by saying anything? *throws salt over shoulder, knocks on wood, rubs lucky rabbit foot*)?

When I load a new patrol, the first thing I do is jump to the map room, hit the NO, click on the outbound. Once he's plotted an outbound, I tell him to follow plotted and off the boat goes (I also hit the 2 key so as not to over run the escort ship. Forgot to do that once and I ended up damaging the sub bad by running into him). Then, I go to where it exits the canal, plot the rest of my trip, including the patrol plot by the NO. As I plot the return trip, I zoom the map as close as I can and put my last point ON the Keil inbound icon on the map, then click on the NO and tell him to plot me an inbound and he does. I usually have my whole trip planed out on the map before I ever turn west. Matter of fact, I'm usually not even out of the harbor area before I'm done. It has worked perfectly every time. No having to point 000, 090, 270, NE, nothing. I've come up on that marker in a few different directions all depending on how I plotted my course coming back in.
