I think the "advantage" that a type II can really gives you are

1. agility ~ A small boat vs Depth charges

2. Smaller size ~ smaller contact on enemy radar

Have a nice day! Switch to type IX or VII if you cannot cope with it

i love the type II's when i first started playing SHIII thats the boats i started in (naturally being the 1st flotilla and the first one i came across)
after cutting my teeth i did earn enough renown to get me a type VIIA but i always missed my type II's they have a special place for me.

i'm one of those off people who like the u-boats in the med add on (i bought it before i discovered NYGM) and using the type II's in the med is a hell of a lot of fun. not too far to run around and its pretty target rich, you've got to be sneaky sneaky though.

got to say the ability to change depth so fast in the type II's has saved my bacon so much depth charges dropping shallow or deep and me skipping out their way.
class.

On your way out of port at the beginning of your patrol...don't forget to pay the milch cow a visit

Something to bear in mind is that the Type-II boats are given different patrol grids to the Type-IXs. You can get to the east coast of England and back a lot faster than the east coast of the USA. Thus you end up completing a lot more patrols in the course of the war. If you like to do one patrol per evening, with limited time, then this might suit you better. Fewer torpedoes might make the missions more challenging and thus exciting. Sort of comes down to playing style, that's all.
