Welcome aboard! Ask anything about anything; if we don't know the answers, we'll make 'em up...um, er, I meant "look 'em up"!:rotfl:

Thank you.
Firstly: I have noticed on my Career File I am down as "Player Profile" with a fine photograph of a long deceased, I am sure, of a U-Boat Officer. You can see what I have done...not cancelled "Player Profile" to enter a name. Can I correct this?
Secondly: My system is on top line and perfectly able to handle SH3, with tons of room to spare. However I keep getting "Fade-outs" of ships and "Convoys". One minute they are indicated true and strong, the next I'm sailing through them as if attacking the "Flying Dutchman"
Any help would be great......Dustyboats.

I'm a little confused on the player profile deal. I usually just enter some name and begin my career. Have you entered a name and started a career?

Just what does you computer have as far as hardware? RAM/video card/etc.

You'll need to over type the name "Player Profile" with whatever you want your skipper to be called before you start your career, otherwise that's what he'll be called. You can have multiple skippers running without any problems.

I'm not sure what you mean about "fade-outs" of ships and convoys. Do you mean that you see ships from the bridge and can just sail right through them? Or do you mean that on the map you see a marker that says a ship or convoy is at such and such a position and when you get there they are nowhere to be seen?

If it is the former, I'm not sure I can help as it sounds like the Flying Dutchman has visited your PC.

If it is the latter, what you are seeing is a report of a ship or convoy appear on your map remembering that this only exists at a certain point in time. They move and what you need to do is work out direction and speed and then plot a course that will intercept them in the future, i.e.; where they are moving to.

Over time the report will fade as it is no longer current. I think it takes around 24 hours game time for this to happen but it is probably configurable somewhere.

Check out the wiki and look up plotting intercept courses to find out how to get accurate plots for intercepting them. http://www.communitymanuals.com/shii...itle=Main_Page. You can also try using the noob guide thread at http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/showthread.php?t=96026

Hope this helps and good hunting!

How do you mean
You get contacts on the navmap ? and can then sail through the contact square on the map ?
Or you can see the convoy and then sail through it ?

Are these indications far away from you??? I mean are they 10,20 or even 30km away???? Use the ruler to measure the distance between your boat and the contact. If this is the case then the solution is simple. The contacts you see do move as well as you do. They are where they are indicated but at the time they're indicated. To intercept them you need to plot the correct course. Check this thread if you need to know how to do this Wazoo's Manual Charting & Targeting Tutorial

I am not sure what you mean, Dustyboats, but the map contacts will disappear if you zoom all the way in, as they are contact reports, not ships you are actually seeing. When you get close enough, they will appear in their actual position, and not disappear. (Unless weather is bad or you are submerged)

Also, the tail of the contact indicates what course they are on, so the there will be no contact if you go directly to the indicator on the map, since you will probably get there hours later. The thing is to go flank speed in a paralell line, and then turn sharply so your nose is on a 90 degree course to the intercept point. Use the ruler to calculate distance, and try to get within 3000 metres of the intercept point. Then its just a case of waiting with the finger on the trigger.

Sorry if this is overexplaining, but I dont know what you mean yet.

Oh, and welcome!

Just remember to try to think like a U-boat captain. Ships and convoys can also change course. And they are not sitting still waiting on you to come and kill them. If possible, they will kill you instead.

Keep reading and playing. Remember to save now and then so you can go back to that spot just incase you need to.

Don't worry, you'll get the hang of it eventually.
