I have seen that before, but that is really amazing, how the destroyer almost jumps out of the water.

No offense but the ship looks like a model, too light and it floats kindaa strangly when she is blow up. I'm no expert so there is a great chance that I'm wrong.

None taken. The ship and the sinking however were real, I know I was there. Check the Wikipedia entries on it. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/HMAS_Torrens_(DE-53) She was as light as we could make here as everything usable and some stuf that wasn't have been removed plus hundres of huge holes drilled through internal bulkheads to help her sink. Funny then that the bows stayed up for about 15 mins before dropping pretty quickly to the bottom.

She is now an artificial reef to attract sea life and you can dive on the wreck now if you want.

Before anyone picks me up on that the ship was actually formerly HMAS Torrens, a River Class Destroyer Escort in the RAN.

The River Class DE's were a variant of the Leander class Frigate which were reclassified in the 1960's from ASW Frigate to DE.

Still it made a nice boom when she got thumped by theat keel shot! She was sunk by a Mk48 ADCAP (Advanced Capability) torpedo with a convential warhead fired from over the horizon.

The first explosion is from the pressure wave from the explosion and the 2nd blast is the actual explosion itself travelling slightly behind the pressure wave. The keel as you can see gets badly bent out of shape by the first and then snapped by the 2nd.

Video extension

Very nice, does anyone know the extension of this type of file?
Edit: Got it, it's an flv file, downloaded a player (freeware) & plays good!

Of course it was empty!:rotfl: It was a live range test of the HMAS Farncomb's weapon systems. The Torrens had been decommissioned and was in mothballs for about 12 months before getting sunk. The RAN does have a history of sinking it's own and it's Allies (HMAS Melbourne, twice cut destroyers in half, but that's another couple of stories), but it doesn;t tend to use human targets in live firing excersises.

Another trivia bit is that doctored footage of this sinking was used in the movie Pearl Harbour!
