Dan Simmons is a pretty good SF writer.. I have read several of his books.. but I dont believe that he actually believes in Martians etc...

In his following letter http://www.dansimmons.com/news/message/2006_05.htm
He describes how and why he went about writing this piece..
I think the real motive for writing this is, like most good authors, an attempt to stir people up and maybe even make them think abit.

I am kind of surprized that AL hasent posted a link to this stuff.. it is definitely very disturbing!

I read another message that explained his rational for certain aspects of the story. Of course, he doesn't come out and 'say' that it is real anywhere, just implies it from what I read. I'll see if I can find that message too if I get time this morning. As always, I could be wrong of course.

Ahhh I think I know what you are saying.. he doesnt believe that he was visited by a grandson from the future.. but he does believe in the danger represented by Islam to other (western) religions... that is quite believable!
The time travel is just a literary device used to tell his story..
