My wife and I are looking at buying a house soon and moving out of this small duplex. Once that happens, I'll get a model railroad started. The problem is that it's been so long since I've played with model railroads...20 years...that I'm at a loss for starting one from scratch, not from a box either. My wife complains about the time spent on this computer...just wait until the railroad is built. :rotfl::rotfl::rotfl:

Do y'all know what software programs I can utilize to build one from scratch instead of buying all those books from a hobby store?

Many years ago I worked at a hobby shop. The saying I was taught then was "A good model railroad is NEVER finished." I hope your wife has patience.

As to the 'net versus books, I would recommend finding a good railroad hobby shop and making friends. Then you'll get first-hand advice from people who are doing it all the time. They'll recommend books, perhaps even loan them to you. I don't do trains at all, but I still love reading Model Railroader magazine.

EEP 3.0 series is nice as well. German designer if I'm not mistaken.

Those other games look pretty interesting, but I want logistics with the "simulation". It's about the economy.

More on SMR:

They cannabilized some of the music from Pirates!. Not all of it, but there are several tunes that you'll recognize.

The "hide clutter" button is the only thing that helps the camera perspective while you're trying to lay track. It still needs to be rotatable. Possibly zoomable. Many times when your rail is behind a mountain, or in a valley, you're laying track almost blindly. This really becomes a compounded issue if/when you need to double track, and link connections between the tracks.

Clicking on terminals or resources will give you indicators on the HUD, showing the nearest supply or demand. For example, clicking on a coal mine will show you cities that need the coal, while clicking on a terminal will show you the highest passenger fares and resources that are in demand from that terminal. Pretty cool.

Deleting (bulldozing) track is a horrendous nightmare. You have to delete individual sections, so if you've got some massive roundabout that needs cleaning up later in the game, it may take 5 or 10 minutes just to get all the sections erased.

I had Sid Mier's Railroad Tycoon for my Amiga computer back in the early 90's. It started this genre and was a lot of fun. I bought RT2 and RT3 hoping they would capture what I liked in the original but they didn't and were too serious for my taste. I'm more interested in the building, planning, and managing of train routes, consists, and future expansion. I always felt the stock market stuff was an annoying distraction. Better to build off your own profits from making wise decisions in my view.

Anyway, I bought Railroads once again hoping it would capture more of the building aspects but it's pretty much a watered down version of the RT series. They are taking people's feedback for a future patch, so I'm hopeful they may reorgainize the sim a bit. Time passes too quickly, you can't manage signals manually if you want. Track laying is weird. I never did like laying track as if holding a bull whip and swinging it around before releasing the mouse. I want to "build" the track route by section. The maps are also too congested. They need to spread things out more.

Let's hope they make some improvements.

I don't think the maps are too congested. They are just designed on a *much* smaller scale.

I think the vantage point is too close, which does make the game seem like it's "too congested". I also think the terrain hinders the view to the point where it makes things seem "too congested". I run into track laying problems due to elevation differences, and end up spending money to redo it.

The viewpoint is a significant problem.
