I have never understood why subs sustain damage when hitting a sub net... shouldn't they just get tangled in the net and that's it? or is the net made of some rock hard material against which you slam your boat?

In SHIII subnets cause minor damage each time you hit them. I'm not sure why they damage your hull integrity but they do. I agree they could damage your props, fins or your scope but how are they able to damage your hull?

Even if they were made from stainless steel the worst they could do to your hull is scrape the paint off!

If you come across that ship that just won't die, You know the one....... Given it a belly full of eels, a couple of tonne of lead from the deck gun and she just bobs up un down on the brink, but never quite sinks.......

Ram it.

Quite often does the trick, but keep an eye on your hull integrity.

I think small explosives were attached to the sub nets. That would explain the damage sub nets inflict.

Historically those wire cutters were removed later IIRC as their ineffectiveness had been proven.

Had a destroyer scrape the top of the conning tower and it went down in about 30 seconds as it ripped the belly of the beast open, and only did light damage to the top of the con. I was still able to use the observation scope to attack the merchants, as the other escorts were busy DCing my last known position, and I was able to bag 5 ships from the convoy eventually, as I had them guessing at my location the whole time.

Does anyone have any evidence that explosives were ever placed on subnets? first time I've heard of it. My main point is that the subnets are very poorly modelled in the game and the damage they inflict was probably a compromise to "simulate" the problems a sub would have when running into one and the damage it might cause to control surfaces or props. My main beef is that to my knowledge they could not have caused significant enough damage to hull integrity.
