Default A Terrible Way to Die

My U-boat was just destroyed in a very disappointing way. I figured I'd share my sad tale...

I had just raided Gibraltar, from the Mediterranean side, and managed to sink a T3 tanker that was anchored in the vicinity of the harbor. A T2 that was moored in the port didn't sink after 1 torpedo hit...I surfaced to finish it off with the deck gun (no warships were around, by chance) but I had to immediately re-submerge after drawing the fire (and ire) of the many coastal defense guns! (I hadn't noticed they were there! )

Anyway, my ~50% damaged sub managed to, somehow, slip away. I was almost 'home free', reaching open waters without any warships close by, running at 64x time compression, after a nicely successful patrol. I decided to drop from 20m to 25m just for extra safety...and BAM! The little bit of extra water pressure was enough to destroy the U-boat! And, running at 64x TC, it happened instantly. (Tip: Don't increase depth with a damaged U-boat except at 1x TC.)

It was a very anti-climactic end to the career.

only 50% and 25 m depth...what boat type was that?

I can remember that I used an VIIC and got only 39% left and that boat crushed at 70 m depth...(at 60m damages where taken from the presure)

That is odd, but I remember having a XXI with around the same ammount of HI and she SANK at 30 metres (around there). Some strange things can happen in SH3!

It was most likely a mine, not the pressure...:hmm:

He said he just reached open waters so I assumed he was still near the harbour..

Id be willining to bet that you either smacked the bottom or dived uncontrollably.

At 64x its real easy to do either before you realize what happend. There are some pretty shallow areas around there.

I was just leaving the Gibraltar area to the SE, near the south tip of the Gibraltar peninsula.

I could've hit bottom, I thought it was deeper than 25m where I was, but who knows.

(Unfortunately, SHIII does not have an "instant replay" option. It would be really cool if it did (like Flight Simulator has), so you could go back and watch the last couple of minutes, or so, from various vantage points.) :hmm:

Also, the boat had something less than 58% hull integrity (I didn't check the number after the boat endured one more hit after being at 58%).

Anyways, c'est la guerre. My whole career lasted from December 1 to December 11, 1941. I'm going to have to start the next career closer to 1945 if I ever want to live to see the end of the war.

Here's a picture of the rock of Gibraltar from the west, inside the Gibraltar bay.
At this point we'd used up the last of our torpedoes and were on the way out...

Yes the "death scene" needs some drastic improvement. Dont you just love that "Your dead" screen which pops up all of a sudden and your left sitting there with a stupid stare on your face wondering... "WTF just happend".

On the other hand, I sometimes wonder if when I die it'll be so sudden that my last thought will be "WTF just happend".

Maybe the death screen is most realistic from that point of view.

On the other other hand, I agree. I miss AOD's newspaper accounts of "Local Hero Lost At Sea".

It kind of leaves it to your imagination just they way it is. Maybe they should just show the outside of the U-boat slowing decending into darkness until it is totally black and then it flashes 'mission over' or something to that effect. I don't think watching the inside of the boat as crew screams and scabbles into oblivion is the way to go

This is what happened:

Your boat is damaged to 53% hull intergrety, returning from a long and hard patrol, everyone on board can't wait to get home....

...But, little Bernard feels that he'd better go to the heads because of that musty 4-week old bread that he just ate moments before. After he had done his business, he gets ready to pull the lever.

However, forgetting that he cannot use the heads when submerged and under 24 meters........ FLUSH!!!!!!!! Away goes the shat and your whole boat along with it...
