Well .. me too .. it is quite hard in sub. But both FFG and sub can be played even without TMA, and FFG is much better in it. You have ranging radar, you use active sonar more, and you have helos which handle things without TMA too.
You can use towed aray to detect target bearing and go active or send Helo to get precise location.

Even in sub, situation awareness is build from sonars alone. TMA is mostly for attacking purposes from what I've heard. Correct me somebody if I'm wrong.
