The picture you posted oberon is of a kilo and i think i know why the welds are like that, inside the sail there is ment to be an escape pod the sail is designed to split and allow the pod to float free.

Interesting. You'd think a better method than a lousy weld would have been thought of, for such use.
Why *build* a structural flaw into, of all things, a sub, lol.

You would be surprised though the victors could dive well below 550 meters and the akulas are rated down to 675 meters however the victors are now ageing and i wouldnt be a shock if thier max depth have been reduced to around 450 meters or 420 meters as most are now reaching 15 years +

the mike class hit 1020 meters though.

Thanks for the info. But did the sub(s) that did those numbers have this kind of weld on them ?

Funnily enough the shots i have seen of the mike yes they have had welds like these.

Bear in mind that this dodgy looking weld is on the fin, not the pressure hull so it's a free-flood area with no pressure on it, just mechanical forces caused by drag.
