William,
The questions you pose many of us have spent a lifetime educating ourselves via books and in some cases, attendance at subschools throughout the world. However if you want the straight skinny without people guessing at correct authentic answers, to begin with, I would suggest going to Uboat dot nets technical forum and using their search function. Second, I would also look at Subsim's book section and the read-me and Community manual wiki at the top of the forum. Please don't take this in the wrong way, but most of the questions you ask are readily found there.
