Funnily enough I'm re-reading Edward Young's book at the moment, it's an excellent read.

Training aids were used back during the Roman Empire days. So to see "analog" simulators isn't surprising. I guess what is surprising is the sophistication of the 50's and 60's simulators. Silicon Graphics flight trainers back in the early 80's were pretty darn sophisticated, too.

War can bring out the best, I suppose...
