For those who are unable to run the game with the DLL fix, I found an alternate d3d8.dll that resolves the issue. It is part of the AlpyneDreams d8vk utility. While the utility was originally written for Linux, it is not necessary. The DLL can be copied out of its directory and replace the current d3d8.dll that the GOG installer uses and most players have been using for years. It has far greater compatibility and works around oddball conflicts with some modern computers. The only caveat is that on some systems, the music will loop unexpectedly, but I, for one, mute the music anyway, making it a non-issue.
