Weather and Sea unchanged in 17h. 1130 - Wind and Sea increasing, shifting East. 1200 - Qu.6974DG - Days Run: 193.4nm - ↗ (24h) Total: 2425.2nm (12tg 22h) - ↗ 2337.7nm (11tg 14h 44') - ↘ 87.5nm (1tg 7h 16') 474cbm (3cbm in 24h); Course 211°; Battery 97%; 3xT-3, 2xEtoFat, 1xT-4; 9xBold; ESE7/6, medium swell, clear, light haze, good visibility, >1000mb. 1501 - ENE7/6, medium swell, clear, light haze, good visibility, >1000mb – F.T. from U 460: To B.d.U.: Alarm for aircraft. Lost contact to convoy ONS.7. - Nagel - 1704 - F.T. from U 128: To B.d.U.: Attacked by destroyer out of a rain squall. Sinking. - Steinert – According to B-Dienst Report, U 128 (Oblt. Hermann Steinert), was sunk by enemy aircraft and patrol boat, south of Recife, Brazil, in FJ 68 and FJ 59. 1838 - F.T. from U 528: To B.d.U.: Boat attacked from aircraft and destroyer. Not able to dive. Scuttling the boat. - Rabenau - 1912 - F.T. from U 646: To B.d.U.: Surprise attack from airplane. Direct approach. Casualties and sinking. - Wulff - Cmdr.: Something is going on. Why all of these sudden and unexplainable sinkings of our boats?! It must have something to do with the B.d.U.-F.T. from 15 May 1317. 2101 - Qu.9289DG top left - Destroyer bearing 284°, E=5300, medium speed, on course North. Further FuMB Detections (no Magic Eye). Turns out to be a Hunter/Escort Group of five destroyers traveling in line abreast, no detection. 2105 - Running off on course WNW, as attack conditions are unfavourable: Daylight and high sea and swell. 2115 - Continuing on course 211°, 2x225RPM/8kn. 2137 - Outgoing F.T.: To B.d.U.: Sunderland on 15.5. 1214 Qu.1255DH bottom right, 1802 Qu.1515DH bottom right, and on 16.5. 0007 Qu.1496DH center left, each time on westerly heading. On 17.5. 2101 Qu.9289DG top left Hunter Group 5 Destroyers abreast on northerly heading medium speed. 473cbm and 6 eels. Switching to Circuit Amerika-II. ENE7/6, medium swell, clear light haze, visibility 3nm, >1000mb. Continue outbound transit acc. Op. Orders. - RST - 2244 - Sundown. Weather and Sea unchanged in 8h. 2305 – Incoming Radio Reports: OKW-Report: a) Our troops in the Balkans launch their 5th Offensive against Tito's partisans. b) The Luftwaffe bombards Cardiff, Wales, with 89 airplanes. B.d.U.-Report: a) U 198 (IXD2; Kpt.z.S. Werner Hartmann): Reported sighting at 1400 in KP 8441 a convoy of 6 ships with southerly course and slow speed. She fired 2 two fan torpedoes on 2 large vessels, together 12,000 GRT. Sinking hydrophoned but not observed owing to defence activity. Subsequently air patrol. Commanding Officer confirmed with certainty deterrent depth charges at the convoy 2 hours after attack. b) According to an enemy U-boat situation report of the 15th May, the enemy surprisingly knew exactly the disposition of the Groups "Danube 1 and 2". The Groups are ordered to maintain radio silence except for important tactical messages. B-Dienst Report: a) Enemy U-boat sightings: AL 3828, AM 5111, AL 39, BE 51, BB 30, FC 78, FC37. b) Enemy Aircraft in the Iceland area reported 3 U-boat sightings and a depth-charge attack, probably with hits. At 2105 on the 13th May a further aircraft attacked a U-boat with depth charges. Auxiliary Aircraft Carrier USS Bogue (CVE-9) arrived at Hvalfjörður, Iceland, where she stayed just one night. RST
