Wait until the Cat needs dental work, big bucks going down range then. A couple of years ago our rescued fellow became increasingly bitey and aggressive. When he went off his food, we took him to the vet and it turned out that he had two painful abscesses in his gums. Seven teeth were extracted and all of the aggression vanished along with a return of his normal healthy appetite. Almost $800 CAD for the diagnosis, dental surgery and follow-up.

The vet theorized that severe malnutrition before his rescue contributed to the gum disease that caused the abscesses a couple of years later.

If you see them as more than possessions, the money becomes less important. No value judgements here, for some they're merely pets but for others they're as good as part of the family.

Vet bills can be expensive

Best to shop around. In my area there is a significant price difference between vets that are about 20 minutes away from each other.

Used to have pet insurance for the family Lhasa Apso but the monthly premiums would rise considerably on each yearly anniversary so now we salt away £30 into a savings account each month in preparation for whatever, whenever.

Good idea Jim.
@ Platapus, the nearest vet is about 45mns (50km) away from us, we don't have much choice here.

Pet insurance is not always the best choice, depending on a person's finances and location. Self-insuring the way you do it may be the wisest choice. One option is to have pet insurance that only covers catastrophic (or dogastrophic) surgeries, which should be relatively inexpensive and self-insure for the more routine things.

Yikes! That's quite the change from where I live. It seems there is a vet clinic every mile or so.
