Some other merchants have weird names like this too, for example tankers (similar alphabet soup).
Been digging through all the files that came with the mod, but I haven't found this explained anywhere (yet).
you won't find an explanation anywhere.
i believe this naming convention is a hold-over from previous release of SH.
what version of Dark Water are you playing? i ask because i have Version 6 and the ship names (classes) have been cleaned up.

Ok I think I've just sumbled upon a bug. I wanted to make another video and started a Type-IX C-Career. Shortly after leaving Lorient (maybe some 500 km away) I clicked on the "show maximum range" button and at 10 kts, the maximum range was only about 13.000 km which is way too low for a Type IX C. I went back to main menu, started a new career in a Type IX C, went to 10 kts, clicked on show maximum range, and then the max range was about 27.000 km, as it should be. Is that a known issue?

All mods in SH3 and SH4 have troubles with training flotillas, due to the way the "flotillas" and "days in base" are structured, in conjunction with the way a mission is assigned to a submarine. As such, if you take too long to do a given training mission, it throws everything afterwards "out of time", sort of like the timing chain in your vehicle slipped a notch or two, and now you are getting ignition mis-fires. Similar can happen if you are just too good at the training and complete the training too early. Now your next assignment doesn't get assigned until a certain date, and you are probably a day or two (at the least) out in front of the transfer. There is nothing preventing you though, from stopping at a base somewhere to get fuel and load-up with more torpedoes, and take it upon yourself to go "hunting", either in the Baltic, or the North Sea for a few days while you "kill some time"...

Someone else had similar happen Fifi, and I am unable to find the post. It had to do with a portion of the Windows Defender, not in the virus section, but like the malware section... I think it is Microsoft trying to eliminate all of us old dawgs from playing "legacy" games... lol

As has been pointed out by several other users here, the naming convention is actually rather descriptive. Look at that picture from the ONI manual again, and notice that "M" stands for "Mast", "K" stands for "Kingpost", "S" is "Superstructure", or just "Structure", while "F" is funnel". It describes the ship from front to back, or bow-to-stern. Generally, the "longer" the name like that, the longer the ship is in meter length, and after a while, you don't even need to look in the rec manual. You'll just go "Oh, 9 letters, so it is about 190 meters in length!"... and if you do 90 attacks, even that isn't important. ??

It has been "discovered" (again recently) that all of those little "helpful" buttons are not really so helpful after all. There is something wrong with the internal math that the games uses to determine the estimated mileage. Also found to be "wanting" is the "Time to course end". I have no clue how many hours in the day they are using, but it seems like it is twenty hours one time, then 42 hours the next. Not to be trusted. However, some players (myself included) will pawn that off to "the fog of war". You just never knew when you would have a HORS engine break on you, so it mattered little what the math equations were based upon... Might be a reason they were left out of the stock game...

Mr. WH4K,

i "fixed" this issue in a previous release of Dark Waters (for my install) however i cannot find my notes at the present time.
i believe i had to discover which set of letters (KMQZMK-OU812) went with which ship. i believe i used the \Sea\Shipname.CFG and Roster\names.cfg. but this is from memory and i only have an 8k memory module. i'll look a bit deeper for my notes if you're serious about changing the names.

Compare the Sea cfg to the Roster cfg to the Roster / Names.cfg...

By the way, even though the .7z file I downloaded says I have v6.7, and JGSME recognizes DW/OM as v6, the title screen says v5.

Is there a written & illustrated guide to the German fire control equipment/TDC, anywhere, preferably .pdf format? It seems as if the SH4 U-boat add-on came with no such documentation. I have searched both this forum and elsewhere.

german uboats were not designed with a real TDC as the US subs were. here is bit more information on the German system.

First off, sweet mod. It's nice to see Operation Monsun get some much-deserved love.

One small thing I've noticed is that the optional mission markers are in German, but it's somewhat broken German.

O_BaseStop.dds reads 'Die Zone der Operation', which is technically gramatically correct, but 'Operationszone' or 'Operationsgebiet' would probably be the terms that would be used.
O_Insertion.dds similiarly currently reads 'Die Zone der Landung' and would more naturally be called 'Landungszone' or 'Landungsgebiet' in German.
O_Lifeguard.dds is the same and should be 'Evakuierungsgebiet' or 'Evakuierungszone'.
O_Patrol.dds is currently 'Das Quadrat des Patroullieren', which is not gramatically correct, seeing as its in the genitive (possessive) case, so an s would be at the end of 'Patrouillieren'. That would still be kinda clunky though and 'Patrouillenzone' or 'Patrouillengebiet' would sound better.
O_Photo.dds currently reads 'Die Zone der Untersuchung' and should probably be 'Aufklärungsgebiet', 'Aufklärungsziel', 'Aufklärungszone' or something like that. 'Untersuchung' is usually used for an investigation, while 'Aufklärung' is the term for reconaissance.
O_Reach.dds - see O_BaseStop.dds.
O_Supply.dds reads 'Das Quadrat der Auftankung'. 'Treffpunkt mit U-Boot-Begleitschiff', 'Treffpunkt mit Flottentender' (Rendezvous with submarine tender) or something like that would be better IMO.
O_Target.dds currently reads 'Die Zone des Angriffsziels'. Just 'Angriffsziel' would be enough here.

On a side note, is it possible to have the AOBF marked in German?

I love the UI of this mod btw. The map also seems to get the names right as far as I have seen so far, so no issues with the German there.

Edit: While I'm at it, the recognition booklet covers are also slightly wrong.

'Die Kriegsschiffe der Japan' should be 'Die Kriegsschiffe Japans'
'Die Handelsflotten der Welt' is correct
'Die Kriegsschiffe der Vereinigte Staaten' should be 'Die Kriegsschiffe der Vereinigten Staaten'
'Die Kriegsschiffe der Australien' should be 'Die Kriegsschiffe Australiens'
'Die Kriegsschiffe der Belgien' should be 'Die Kriegsschiffe Belgiens'
'Die Kriegsschiffe der Brasilien' should be 'Die Kriegsschiffe Brasiliens'
'Die Kriegsschiffe der Britisches Reich' should be 'Die Kriegsschiffe des Britischen Reichs', or 'Die Kriegsschiffe des Vereinigten Königreichs'
'Die Kriegsschiffe der Bulgarien' should be 'Die Kriegsschiffe Bulgariens'
'Die Kriegsschiffe der Kanada' should be 'Die Kriegsschiffe Kanadas'
'Die Kriegsschiffe der Dänemark' should be 'Die Kriegsschiffe Dänemarks'
'Die Kriegsschiffe der Ägypten' should be 'Die Kriegsschiffe Ägyptens'
'Die Kriegsschiffe der Estland' should be 'Die Kriegsschiffe Estlands'
'Die Kriegsschiffe der Finnland' should be 'Die Kriegsschiffe Finnlands'
'Die Kriegsschiffe der Frankreich' should be 'Die Kriegsschiffe Frankreichs'
'Die Kriegsschiffe der Freies Frankreich' should be 'Die Kriegsschiffe des Freien Frankreichs'
'Die Kriegsschiffe der Deutsches Reich' should be 'Die Kriegsschiffe des Deutschen Reichs'
'Die Kriegsschiffe der Griechenland' should be 'Die Kriegsschiffe Griechenlands'
'Die Kriegsschiffe der Indien' should be 'Die Kriegsschiffe Indiens'
'Die Kriegsschiffe der Italien' should be 'Die Kriegsschiffe Italiens'
'Die Kriegsschiffe der Lettland' should be 'Die Kriegsschiffe Lettlands'
'Die Kriegsschiffe der Litauen' should be 'Die Kriegsschiffe Litauens'
'Die Kriegsschiffe der Niederlande' is correct
'Die Kriegsschiffe der Neuseeland' should be 'Die Kriegsschiffe Neuseelands'
'Die Kriegsschiffe der Norwegen' should be 'Die Kriegsschiffe Norwegens'
'Die Kriegsschiffe der Besetztes Griechenland' should be 'Die Kriegsschiffe des Besetzten Griechenlands'
'Die Kriegsschiffe der Besetztes Norwegen' should be 'Die Kriegsschiffe des Besetzten Norwegens'
'Die Kriegsschiffe der Palästina' should be 'Die Kriegsschiffe Palästinas'
'Die Kriegsschiffe der Panama' should be 'Die Kriegsschiffe Panamas'
'Die Kriegsschiffe der Polen' should be 'Die Kriegsschiffe Polens'
'Die Kriegsschiffe der Portugal' should be 'Die Kriegsschiffe Portugals'
'Die Kriegsschiffe der Rumänien' should be 'Die Kriegsschiffe Rumäniens'
'Die Kriegsschiffe der R.S.I.' is correct
'Die Kriegsschiffe der Sowjet-Union' is correct, although you could also write it as 'Sowjetunion' without the hyphen.
'Die Kriegsschiffe der Südafrika' should be 'Die Kriegsschiffe Südafrikas'
'Die Kriegsschiffe der Spanien' should be 'Die Kriegsschiffe Spaniens'
'Die Kriegsschiffe der Schweden' should be 'Die Kriegsschiffe Schwedens'
'Die Kriegsschiffe der Syrien' should be 'Die Kriegsschiffe Syriens'
'Die Kriegsschiffe der Türkei' is correct.
'Die Kriegsschiffe der Französisch Staat' should be 'Die Kriegsschiffe des Französischen Staates'

I've highlighted those that are correct as bold and those that don't follow the general rule of dropping the 'der' and adding an 's' at the end of the country name as bold and italicized.
