You don't need MODS to be successful at sinking ships, you have to navigate the proper convoy and single merchant ship routes; there's a pull down map on the navigation chart screen. There are frequent map updates during patrols indicating contacts as well; intercept the contacts and send them to the bottom. There are a few training videos to help you in the forum.
