Underwater Geography
Question for modders here: is it technically feasable to modify the depth on the map in order to add some irregular relief? Simply put: could we end up racing in Red Route 1 and get torpedoes to hit the rocks while barely dodging them, Ramius-style?

Subs do not have windows. You are not supposed to be siteseeing at 1000 feet.
That said, currently your torps will hit the sea floor if they are running straight and there is a significant elevation change. I am sure that the devs left out undersea relief intentionally. The oceans are a big place and providing sea floor detail for even small sections of ocean is a big ask. If the devs chose to do this, the modelling would be similar to the modelling used for the subs. A finite number of models would be available and they would be applied to a specific region of the ocean for each mission. These would quickly become just as monotonous as the barren sloping sea floor that we have as the obstacles and terrain would would be exactly the same each time the model was used. Same rocks, same elevation changes, same details every time. You can't hide behind a rock in a sub but you can hide behind an undersea hill and we have those. This game is not a real world sub sim. It is primarily a combat-centric shooter game so that is where the graphic focus lies. Besides, how many times would you actually make a "Ramius run" through the same undersea canyon? Once, twice? |
