Dick Dale was left-handed and originally tried to play right-handed guitars, but gave up and used left-handed guitars; however, he left his guitars strung as if they were right-handed models, meaning the guitar strings were 'upside-down', with the bass strings on the bottom of the fretboard rather than at the top (This is also how Albert King, another leftie, played his guitars). Dale also use string of a massive heavy gauge, giving his sound its deep rumbling nature...
Dale's most well known hit, Misirlou, was Dlae's adaptation of a very popular, and much covered/adapted Middle Eastern composition, with the title literally meaning "Egyptian Girl": https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Misirlou Dale's Middle Eastern family background influenced much of his playing style and made him distinctive among surf guitar players... The Father of Surf: 7 Essential Dick Dale Facts -- https://www.fender.com/articles/arti...ck-dale-facts/ There were an awful lot of beginning guitar players in the early 60s who cut their teeth (and not a few fingers) trying to get that 'Dick Dale Sound'. The long list of later pro guitarists who have cited Dick Dale as an influence is a testament to his place in music history... RIP, Dick Dale, and get those angels to start double-picking on their harps... <O>
