The biggest problem with fleet development, however, is that almost all parties in the size of their ships want to surpass themselves.

It's just ridiculous to build huge ships (including subships) if they eventually fail.

I think, especially Uboote from the Netherlands and especially from Germany in recent decades in the fleet exercises have proven.

They are not even in the position to protect their aircraft carrier as well as any other ship from the derided small submarines.

It's just ridiculous... or more precisely inability.

Not quite following, the Nimitz class is the largest warships in existence they seem to have the size right because the fords are the same length, their mission role dictates size.

Western carriers are designed for mainly strike warfare where as the Russian heavy aviation cruiser is a cruiser that carries aircraft for fleet defense.

the carriers are highly successful and will likely remain so into the next generation.

The submarines have become more tactical sized the typhoon replacement which is the borei is of a more modest size and the replacement for the Oscar II will likely be of a more modest size if at all.

exercises are one thing real combat is another, exercises are scripted and follow a pattern to reach an objective in warfare your enemy is unlikely to follow a script the Swedish and German exercises proved valuable but again their events were scripted.

This. Nothing says give the skimmers a chance like being restricted to a known box, among other ridiculous rules. War games are a chance to find weak areas and work to address those weak areas, but instead (for quite some time now) they are participation trophies to make a unit deployable.

i think the RN has the best exercise of all to be honest, its called Thursday war it has no script all the navy knows is they may come under attack by submarine a ship or aircraft or more than one unit in a certain area other than that they dont know how many what direction or when they will come.
