Perhaps the answer lies in the way many Brits regard the garden as just another 'room' for the house (when the weather allows). So many folks here like a private area outside, where they can relax without being watched by strangers.
We are a Nation of house buyers in the UK, so we look for a place which gives us what we want... my wife and I wanted plenty of garden because we wanted lawns, seating areas, space for pets and wild areas, so we had to go somewhere we could find all this at a price we could afford... which was why we had to move right away from our home town. Other people prefer an enclosed and more formal garden, with decking and pools etc, where they can chill without worrying about how fast the grass and hedges are growing.

Not around here, bloody housing popping up every where and I have been informed by my council my protest along with others about plans to build housing on some rotten land next to my gaff has been given the go ahead. You want privacy around here forget it.

Our property here in Virginia is about 1,238 m² (13,330 ft² or about a third of an acre). My back yard alone is about 638 m² (6,869 ft² or 0.16 acres).
That's all well and good ... until it's time to mow the lawn. Back when all I had was a push mower, between the bees, low hanging branches from the three trees on our property and the hot summer sun, I used to come in sweaty, bloody and defeated. Even with the riding mower (lawn tractor) I have now, it's no easy task. What with all the trimming and bush manicuring I have to do. It's an all day job. Not the way I'd like to spend my day off. A bigger property seems nice ... at first. But, what do we really do with it? Not much. Sure, we could host a party of several dozen people comfortably. But the reality is that most of the time it's just a pain in the arse. Even though our property is relatively small for this area, I often envy people who "only" have a postage stamp sized yard to deal with.

You're right... at the moment I'm constantly to and fro the local recycling centre (used to be called the Tip) with sacks of hedge and tree prunings. As you get older you do wish there was far less to do... it's a neverending task
