What is your monitor set to? Some monitors have all sorts of "temperature settings" for different light conditions. You could try switching between them. When I get serious about my Silent Hunter, I'll sit in a darkened room. Not total black-out, but just a lamp in the corner, away from a screen reflection, but enough that I can see the keyboard. Curtains closed if it's daylight out. That lets the "night shine" on my LCD monitor. Then, when the full moon is out, it practically blinds you... Also, it doesn't take much with the gamma setting to notice a major difference.

My monitor settings are fine. This is actually my gaming laptop. That way I can sit on my couch watching WWII sub documentaries while playing SHIII.

Perhaps it's a moon thing. Like I said before the gamma doesn't work because it doesn't allow the adjustment of contrast so the entire game, HUD and all, look terrible.

I'm playing SHIII right now but I'll attempt SH4 again soon and see if it's still bearable. I really find it odd that I can't find anyone else mentioning this issue via google search. Maybe I just use the outside view a lot more than everyone else. I just love watching everything play through graphically after I set my orders. Beautiful games.

Yeah it's still terrible. Basically unplayable. Very unfortunate because the graphics are great during the day. Night... can't tell the difference between the sky and the water.

Damn it. I figured it out. I didn't realize I had any mods installed. It's the Real Environment mod.

I'll try to find a better graphics mod.
