Since your just starting out, I suggest you ignore the mission, go sink 60 to 100 thousand tons (refit as necessary), go back to port, end patrol.
I have done this mission, it is a very sticky situation. Not a lot of places to surface, recharge or save games. PS: other threads talk about problems saving game submerged with too many contacts nearby. restarting from those saved games is sometimes very iffy. welcome aboard, and happy hunting. |

In real life there were only a handful of photo-recon missions assigned to submarines, and every single one of them was to photograph an island the US was thinking of invading. No one was ever asked to go into the enemy's main naval base. Places like Tokyo are very lightly protected in the game, when compared to what they were really like.
As everyone else said, just ignore the mission.

I would ignore the mission,I have done the mission a few times depending on what mod you are running there are a few juicy targets in there as I recall depending what year your going in and getting in is easy getting out is not when the fireing starts.

Of course, you can only do that in game if you have the proper appendectomy mod installed.
