In February 1945, Elizabeth II joined the Women’s Auxiliary Territorial Service, as an honorary Second Subaltern with the service number of 230873. She trained as a driver and mechanic, drove a military truck, and was promoted to honorary Junior Commander five months later. She is the last surviving head of state who served in uniform during the Second World War.

It would take more than 007 to put me down...

BTW, I noticed, in the picture of The Queen with the MG, she was firing without the requisite extension of the pinkie finger...how gauche...

Here in Los Angeles, we have had a lot of Presidents visit for various reasons. Regan was probably he most frequent visitor since CA was his home base and he had offices in the Century City area of Los Angeles. Over the years I have seen the various comings and goings of the POTUS and have noted the varying degrees of SS protection (with the aid of the local LEOs) afforded to them. Until Reagan, the security was generally not very overt; once Reagan was in office, it all became a sort of show of importance, with extended motorcades and a bit of pomp. It even extended to the First Lady: President Sadat and his wife were visiting here and Nancy Reagan, at the last minute, thought it would be a good idea to have breakfast, with Mrs. Sadat, at the County Museum of Art; without any warning to anyone (apparently not even to the local civic authorities), an entire mile of Wilshire Blvd., a very major thoroughfare, was blocked off and the adjacent three blocks on either side were put off limits. I had personal experience with this since, at the time, I was working at an office directly across Wilshire from the art museum and had to slog a great way out of my usual route to get to work. This sort of spur of the moment disruption became the norm for Regan visits. Clinton was pretty low key; you barely knew he was there; it was a return to the minimalist POTUS presence. When GWB would visit, after 9/11, the security was amped up, the new tactic being to cordon off a number of possible routes for his motorcade and not letting anyone, even the local LEOs know the actual route until the last minute. This tactic has continued with Obama, but with an added twist: now, when POTUS visits LA, his usual group of three choppers is now augmented with a trio of Osprey aircraft flying escort. I can always tell when POTUS is coming to LA; the Ospreys will fly dry runs over LA for a couple of days before POTUS arrives; a low altitude flight of those bizarre machines is something you can't miss. There has been speculation the Ospreys have been deployed as escorts in a move to change public perception of the troubled defense project...

Default When Kestrel meets Osprey?!! the trouble with helicopters

http://www.thedailybeast.com/articles/2014/05/09/obama-s-new-helicopter-fleet-could-cost-20-billion.html http://fly.historicwings.com/2013/02/shot-down-at-the-white-house/ followed by: http://www.npr.org/sections/itsallpolitics/2015/05/21/408459987/gyrocopter-pilot-on-his-incredible-flight-into-capitol-lawn AS one who has maintained 'sacred' grass during a US Open (Hazeltine Minnesota 1970) and guarded TV Trauma show Helicopters...all night long to prevent theft of 3 flyable units( the show's real stars imho) with potential mayhem for a year; I am uniquely qualified to say that only Marine One should be allowed to land at Windsor, same as at the White House! HOWEVER Obama could switch to the Osprey for this visit
