It looks like the sailors are to be released. No iranian hostage crisis 2016 so far.

Quote:
Earlier, the naval commander of Iran's Revolutionary Guards, General Ali Fadavi, said he was satisfied a mechanical failure was behind the incursion.
"We have concluded that passage of Americans in our territorial waters was not a hostile passage or for espionage or similar acts," he told Iranian television.

Well, we let the North Koreans keep the Pueblo all these years. These riverine boats probably aren't as valuable.

According to NBC the boats have also been returned.

Quote:
The U.S. Navy confirmed that the sailors had been "safely returned" after departing Iran's Farsi Island at 3:43 a.m. ET aboard the riverine vessels they had been operating when the incident occurred.

They were later transferred ashore by Navy aircraft while other sailors took charge of their boats and continued on for Bahrain, the Navy added in a statement.

That was a mistake, this is the proper thread for this subject.

Dumb move by Iran.
They could have just escorted the boats out of Irans waters and show them which way to the carrier.
The again, never hurts to take a peak at what the adversary has. And those US navy personel they held, I'd take them for a free night at one luxury hotel in Iran, aggressive marketing

https://gma.yahoo.com/iran-releases-...pstories.html#

Am i reading this correctly? the original crew of the two boats was transferred ashore and replaced with a new crew? why?

The boat(s) had a mechanical breakdown?

it also mentions in the story that the refueling operation was not carried out

so my assumption is that the boats traveled some distance, the crew was changed out with a new crew, it was clearly not communicated to the new crew whether or not the fueling operation had been completed and it is my belief that they carried on without sufficient fuel and their "mechanical breakdown" is the face saving way of saying "we dun runned out of gas"

The Iranian forces who captured the boats and crew are apparently of a rather hardcore religious militant faction of the military and appear to have done this action of their own accord. I rather suspect the power that be in Tehran probably took a dim view of the action and put a swift end to the militants activities. It really serves or served no purpose to irritate the US over two small, inconsequential craft...

Well, if a foreign power with our history has navy boats in your waters, it's a good idea to check them out. Did they really run out of fuel or have a mechanical breakdown? Maybe, maybe not. Iran is well within their right to interdict them.

We have weekly incidents when Croatian fishing boats wander into Slovene waters and vice versa so if we brought in every boat like happened here Slovenia would have more ships than NATO.
That's why I'm not used to anything more than a ''shoo, you're not allowed here''

Yeah, that's reasonable between friendly countries.

The right to interdict for sure - but interdiction must not become interdicktion.
The whole "we demand an apology!" thing (for a "mech. breakdown?") is nothing but "look, mighty iran stronk, puny USA has to beg forgiveness!" which in the end, is a very weak testimony for Iran.
If they would have acted gallantly, the world would have tipped its head at them. But now, they only gave everyone an additional reason to shake their heads at them.
Still, can't wait for the official/true story - if we may ever hear it.
