A roll in a Vulcan is certainly do-able, and I think many of us were hoping that they would pull one off before XH558 retired, but the scrutiny of the heritage jet scene after the Shoreham crash meant that such a stunt would have generated a LOT of negative publicity.
Closest we've seen really was Kev Rumens cracking take-off at RIAT 2015 when he pulled her sharp into a right hand turn just after take off. Really shows what a manoeuvrable aircraft the Vulcan was, deceptively so for its size. ![]() But yes, those pictures...well...I'll wait until the CAA finishes its investigation. I don't know much about the Avro or Hawker Siddeley Vulcan but always thought the design was way ahead of it's time coming into service in 1956 although I have no idea what it's flight characteristics were. I'm sure it was on the drawing boards before that. I always wondered if the design was influenced by the capture of the Horton brothers flying wing or blueprints of the same.
Either way, it's a distinctive aircraft and I wish I could have seen one fly in Farnborough in 1955 like Eichhörnchen said but it was way before my time. Thanks for posting the photos. |

I saw one fly at Farnborough in about 1968 when I was a little air cadet... when it turned in the distance you could only really see the dark green camo patterns against the sky; consequently it looked kind of like a swarm of bees you see in cartoons (when they chase Barney Bear).
Funny how I remember that and not much else from the day, except our bus getting stuck in the mud: we all had to get out and push it. On manoeuvrability, I think the aircraft was extremely powerful and agile, designed to "lob" a payload towards a target on occasion. I think it's a beautiful thing.

![]() Look at the other clips here too, especially the one of the Vulcan setting off car alarms...

Awesome video Eichhörnchen. I loved the close flyby. The sound of the engines were incredible too. My vacuum cleaner sounds similar and just like the mighty Vulcan can destroy most adversaries my vacuum wipes out dust bunnies if they dare show up when I clean ![]() Seriously, It's a great aircraft and sounds incredible. This is a video of a Vulcan Bomber at Blackpool Air Show in 2015 ( HD ) and also the Avro Vulcan XH558 displaying at Blackpool ~Enjoy~ Last edited by Commander Wallace; 11-10-15 at 02:13 PM. |
